Frequently Asked Questions

A Word from Dean Kamen

“FIRST is more than robots.  The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills.  Kids often come in not knowing what to expect – of the program nor of themselves.  They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.”

What is FIRST?

Accomplished inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Based in Manchester, NH, FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering. With support from over 200 of the Fortune 500 companies and more than $30 million in college scholarships, the not-for-profit organization hosts the FIRST® Robotics Competition for students in Grades 9-12; FIRST®Tech Challenge for Grades 7-12; FIRST® LEGO® League for Grades 4-8; and FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. for Grades K-4. Gracious Professionalism® is a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. What is FIRST Tech Challenge?

It’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (10+ members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles (like keeping an engineering notebook), while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and can be programmed using a variety of languages. Teams also must raise funds, design, and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards. Participants have access to tens of millions of dollars in college scholarships. Each season concludes with regional Championships and an exciting FIRST Championship.

Who are we?

Out of the Box Robotics Team 7244 is made up of middle school and high school students from various locations in the area. Since we are a private team from multiple schools, we do not have financial support from the school district. For our team to continue functioning and inspiring students in our community we rely on generous donations from local businesses to not only cover the cost of build materials but also the cost of registration.

How Do I Get Involved?

There are several ways to get involved. If you are student, you can ask your friends to help you form up a team. If you are an adult, you can mentor and coach a team. Forming teams are not the only way to get involved. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer at qualifiers like as referees, judges, and even work the concession.
